The chlorella ingredients market is projected to grow considerably during the forecast period

Chlorella is a type of algae that grows underwater and is commonly known as Seaweed. It has many properties which can be used for nutrition and medicine. It is beneficial due to the constitution of bio-active compounds such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), photosynthetic pigments, polysaccharides, and phenolic compounds in Chlorella. These compounds provide therapeutic effects to the human body. Chlorella has been of use as a dietary supplement in the market. It comes in the form of powder due to its ability to bind heavy metals like mercury, which are considered toxins to the human body, and extract them out of the body through natural means. The most common applications of chlorella in functional foods are in products such as croissants, pasta, yogurt and cookies.

Introduction:

Chlorella ingredients have been acquired from chlorella, which includes vitamins, amino acids, minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, zinc and much more, and fatty acids. Chlorella also provides various health benefits due to its therapeutic effects on the human body since it contains anti-oxidants, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-coagulant, anti-viral, and anti-enzymatic properties. It was found that mothers who were given chlorella saw the increased quality of protective antibodies in their breast called immunoglobin, a type A (IgA) that provides a neurological defensive barrier to any kind of virus penetrating the body. It has also been proven to maintain the immunity of athletes during intense exercises and to treat viral infections such as Hepatitis C, which affects the liver.

It has been proven to provide more nutritional value and increase in characteristics of the food when the chlorella ingredient is used in functional foods. However, it does not always provide good results. It has been shown to induce an effect called “Chlorella Induced Psychosis”, which can occur to a certain few people who consume chlorella. Such cases have occurred, for instance, in Omaha, Nebraska, a 48-year-old woman suffered a psychotic break two months after consuming the chlorella. It was later fixed when she stopped consumption.

Drivers:

  • Growing demand in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals: There has been an increased demand for algae-sourced products like Omega 3 fatty acids, which contain minerals that are found in chlorella. Since omega-3 fatty acids play a major role in the prevention and treatment of several human diseases such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and neurological disorders, have anti-inflammatory properties, provide joint support, and many others, the dependency on chlorella and other ingredients will only increase for the production of omega-3 fatty acids, which will boost the growth of chlorella ingredients market.
  • Gaining traction of health benefits: Chlorella has proven to contain multiple health benefits. Chlorella produces a molecule known as lutein, which has been proven to treat muscular degeneration has anti-cataract properties and is effective against tumors, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. It also has been proven to act as a symptom reliever and improve the daily lives of people with fibromyalgia, hypertension, and ulcerative colitis, and helps in the reduction of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol since chlorella contains multiple therapeutic properties. Due to the health benefits being known to the public, there will be more increase in demand for chlorella-related products and production of chlorella ingredients for use in cosmetics, food and beverages, and medicine.
  • Growing popularity in beauty products: Chlorella has useful components that provide a variety of benefits and antioxidants are most focused for cosmetics. Chlorella Vulgaris is green in colour with the bioactive component chlorophyll. It provides anti-aging properties and helps in the repair mechanism of the skin, proving to be stable for cosmetics production. It has been shown that there has been a growth in the cosmetics industry, reaching a total of €80 billion in the European market alone in 2021. This can be a factor in the growth of the chlorella ingredients market as well, since its dependency on the cosmetics market.

Key Players:

  • NP Nutra: A leading nutraceutical and ingredients that provide a variety of botanical extracts with health as the first focus.
  • Vedan Enterprises: One of the leading biotechnology firms that bring innovation and production of high-value ingredients.
  • Sun Chlorella, Inc.: A leader in the production of natural ingredients market with products, which include extracts from chlorella, agaricus, and eleuthero.

Regional Analysis:

The Asia Pacific region is expected to witness increasing growth in the forecasted period of 2024 – 2029. As per the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the cultivation and collection of Seaweed, otherwise known as Chlorella, is 34.88 million tonnes in 2019 when compared to the rest of the world. This is due to the geographical advantage and developments made of aquatic agriculture in the region of the Asia Pacific. It is expected to significantly boost the chlorella ingredients market as aquatic agriculture has a major focus on chlorella.
