Mexico Avocado Market is evaluated to be US$1076.8 million in the year 2020.

As of 2017, according to the government of Mexico, the avocados grown in Mexico are consumed in 34 countries of the world. Further, as of January 2020, the area planted with avocado for the 2020 cycle was 241,140 hectares, of which 164,346 have been harvested which were reportedly 15,161 more, an increase of 10.2% compared to the previous year. The avocado production in Mexico reached 206,466 tons which reportedly is 0.5% (1,026) higher than that obtained in the same period of the previous year (205,439).

Moreover, Michoacán, which according to the government of Mexico, is an undisputed leading producer, reportedly contributes 94.6% (195,366 tons) to the national total, followed by Jalisco with 4.7% (9,759 tons). These two states constitute 99.4% (205,125 tons) of the country's production.  The states with the highest growth in production volume are Jalisco 1,602 tons (19.6%), Michoacán 324 (0.2%), Oaxaca 96 (12.8%), and Guerrero, with 42 (11.1%) more than the figures registered in 2019. On the contrary, Guanajuato obtained 84 tons (84%) less than last year, while Yucatán and Veracruz do not report production at the moment.

Besides, the avocado market of Mexico is expected to be driven by the increase in the production of a superior variety of avocados. For instance, as reported by the government of Mexico, the production of Morelenses avocados has been growing, reaching 3 thousand 963 hectares harvested in the state of Morelos, obtaining 29 thousand 548 tons of product which have generated a production value of 392 million 878 pesos.

In the state of Morelos, 3 thousand 963 hectares are sown annually, and average yields of 8.25 tons per hectare are maintained, which places us in the fifth national place in the production of this fruit. However, in terms of quality and flavor, Morelos reportedly holds the national first place. Moreover, it is important to note that there are about 2,800 Morelense producers that continue to produce avocados of the Hass, Fuerte, and Criollo varieties in the municipalities of Ocuituco, Tlayacapan, Yecapixtla, and others. Morelos producers have been growing in the production and certification of avocados in recent years, reaching 300 tons of avocado in the Canadian, American, and Hong Kong markets in 2019 compared to 200 tons in 2018.

Key Developments

  • February 2022: According to a report by USDA, in 2021, the United States imported US$3.0 billion worth of avocados from throughout the world, with Mexico accounting for $2.8 billion (92 percent), which accounts for 1.2 million metric tonnes of avocados imported globally, with 1.1 million coming from Mexico.
  • January 2020: According to a report by the Joseli Group, within the 3rd week of the year, the La Asociación de Productores y Empacadores Exportadores de Aguacate de México (APEAM) have shipped more than 33,000 tons of avocados to the United States, owing to the Super Bowl event.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a global slowdown in the economy and revenue. Most industries suffered huge losses, owing to the strict protocols set up by the government. However, the pandemic had a positive impact on the Mexican avocado market. Since most people were stuck in their homes, owing to the lockdown regulations, the importance of home-cooked and healthy meals grew. The USA, the biggest market for the Mexican avocado market, reported a significant increase in imports and sales of avocados. According to an analysis by Texas A&M University, 2.1 billion pounds of avocados were imported from Mexico to the US during the 2019-2020 season. Also, in 2021, Mexico exported 1.2 million metric tons of avocados to the USA, according to the USDA. The steady market demand helped in sustaining the market growth throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the commencement of most major industrial production and processes, the market is anticipated to rise even further.
