The China Sugar Market is anticipated to expand at a CAGR of 3.45% over the course of the forecast period, from US$20.546 billion in 2020 to a total market value of US$26.044 billion by 2027.

The term "sugar" refers to a group of soluble carbohydrates that have a sweet flavor and are utilized in food. Sugar can be changed into a variety of forms after being taken from the sugar beet or sugar cane plant. Along with giving meals a sweet taste, sugar has several significant uses in the food industry. It preserves food and inhibits bacterial growth. China is one of the biggest sugar importers in the world, which will benefit the sugar market and spur its expansion.

However, the region's market may be constrained by the younger population's switch to low-calorie sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Consumption in the food industry to boost the sugar market in China

Consumers are demanding more sugar these days, which is anticipated to contribute to the market's expansion in the country. This is because more people are consuming foods and beverages with added sugar. Additionally, there is a high demand for sugar due to the widespread consumption of sweet foods and desserts, which will support market expansion. About 60% of the sugar consumption in China is anticipated to be used industrially, with the remaining 40% going to home use. Beverages (such as soda, juice, yogurt, and soymilk), ice cream, canned fruit, sweets, bakeries, brewing, and medications are just a few examples of products used industrially. Additionally, leading players' increased investment and product innovation along with new product launches may further support the market's expansion.

Key Developments:

  • May 2022: According to FAS USDA, the consumption of sugar for MY2020/21 is estimated to be 15.5 million metric tons. The amount of sugar consumed in China by each person is estimated to be between 11 and 12 kg, and as the country's economy develops and its population's dietary preferences change, this amount is likely to rise. As a result of weather-related seasonal stability in China's sugar production, imports have increased from 1,617,529 metric tons in MY 2019/20 to 1,865,796 metric tons in MY 2020/21. The price of sugar in China tends to synchronize with the global price as Chinese consumption and imports grow.
  • Sept 2021: Tereos Business has announced that it has divested its 49% holdings in two joint ventures for the production of Chinese starch to Yihai Kerry Arawana Holdings, a Chinese company that manufactures food items and is also an agro-industrial group. Yihai Kerry Arawana Holdings is the Chinese affiliate of Wilmar International. Tereos cooperative organization declared its intention to focus on its three primary businesses of sugar, alcohol, and starch and lower its debt as part of its new strategy.

Product Offerings:

  • Ultrafine Sugar: Ultrafine Sugar (Lightly Milled Sugar) is a blend of small sugar crystals and milled sugar with an average particle size of 160 µm and a range of 5-500µm. Recommended shelf life is 12 weeks, and the useful life is of 18 weeks under suitable storage conditions. The main advantages include smaller grains dissolving more quickly, homogeneous crystal sizes can lessen the possibility of separation in dry mixtures, reduce dust production, and larger crystals offer advantages in terms of aesthetic impact, high shine and crunch, high purity, and free-flowing operations. The wide particle size range offers excellent dissolving qualities for hot and cold powdered drinks, dry mixes, and over-the-counter medications. It is suitable for blending a variety of added ingredients.
  • Dextrose: Enzymatic hydrolysis of starch culminates in the production of dextrose, which is further purified, concentrated, crystallized, centrifuged, and dried. It comes in the form of a sweet-tasting, white, crystalline powder that is very soluble in water. In addition to being used in food and animal feed, dextrose is also used in chemical and pharmaceutical processes. When compared to sucrose and lactose, dextrose helps food manufacturers develop products with a balanced nutritional and sweetness profile, extend shelf life, and use fewer ingredients overall. In baking and brewing, it provides the perfect source of carbohydrates for yeast fermentation.
